faves #1
In 2012, I created a playlist on Spotify, and I still keep it to this day. It continues to expand.
One more reason why Spotify is my favorite application is that I’ve kept all my favorite songs there since 2012. Every time I hear something I like, I save it my playlist called faves. As of today, it contains 543 songs lasting of total 34 hours. There’s no logic behind it, no particular scheme. Just my fave songs.
I sometimes wonder where this urge to keep lists and collect things comes from. The only person in my family who was a list keeper was my uncle. He meticulously handwrote rankings of his favorite songs in notebooks—his top 10 favorites updated weekly. I’ve always loved music rankings, from MTV countdowns to radio playlists. Weekly, annual, “best of the best”—you name it, I was into it. But the root cause of this fascination? That remains a mystery.
I once almost lost this playlist. I’ll never forget when I was on my way home from work, listening to Spotify, and suddenly, Shakira appeared in my headphones. My first thought was, Oh my God, these algorithms have no idea what I like. But when her songs kept coming up—even after I switched playlists—I knew something was wrong. When I got home, I checked my account and found a stranger connected to my profile. Thankfully, since I was the primary owner, I was able to remove the person and quickly change my password. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I had lost my playlist forever.
If you take a closer look at the included songs, you might notice some patterns—or some missing items. For instance, every May, a group of songs gets added from the latest Eurovision contest. However, you won’t find Taylor Swift or The Beatles there—I’d have to add half of their discographies! Both artists have been incredibly prolific, with 262 and 213 songs respectively.
The first song on my list is Chartreuse by ZZ Top. I listen to ZZ Top because Stephen King mentioned them in my favorite book series “The Dark Tower”, Chartreuse is the first song from the album La Futura from 2012.
And the last one? That’s what this post (and possibly a series of future posts) is about—sharing the most recent songs I’ve added to my playlist. These posts won’t follow any particular schedule, as a month could pass without any new additions.
So, let’s take a look at what’s been added in the past month:
Fallingwater by Maggie Rogers
Two weeks ago, I challenged myself to listen to Maggie Rogers’ entire discography. While I didn’t fall in love with all of her music, I found a gem—Fallingwater. It stands out completely from the rest of the album, and the tone change at the 3-minute mark has a magical quality.
OMG by Suki Waterhouse
You may know Suki from tv show “Daisy Jones and The Six”. You may know Suki as Robert Pattinson’s wife. You may know Suki as she was an opening act at Eras Tour.
What I can say - the chorus is very catchy and I’ve started appreciated artists who comes out from their area of expertise (see the next song!).
Gonna Find Out by Kate Hudson
This song is a banger! It appeared on my “Discover Weekly” Spotify playlist, and I was instantly hooked. When I checked the artist I thought it’s a mistake, Kate Hudson - like the actress? Surprise: Kate Hudson can sing. Her new album, Glorious, is pretty good. It has the vibe of late-80s/early-90s pop, more Mariah Carey than Britney Spears, but with an upbeat rock twist.
Are You Looking Up by Mk.Gee
I’ve written about Mk.Gee before in my Unexpected Faves post, so just to add to my previous thoughts - Mk.Gee is a very talented artist who has a big music future ahead of him. I can’t wait for more.
If you enjoyed my recommendations, you might like the full list.
Enjoy 12 years of music I’ve put together!
Till next time,
Agata
